Green Business Model Canvas: from workshop tool to venture-development discipline

Evidence-led practitioner perspective based on entrepreneurship, innovation and institutional-capacity work.

The Green Business Model Canvas is most useful when it does more than add environmental language to a conventional business model. In accompaniment programmes, it should help entrepreneurs connect a real problem, a viable value proposition, resource and stakeholder choices, revenue logic, environmental impact and an implementation path.

From green idea to economic model A green idea becomes investable only when the environmental challenge is translated into a specific customer or user problem, a credible solution, a delivery model and evidence that the entrepreneur can execute. This is why Green Ideation, the Green Business Model Canvas and the Green Business Plan should be treated as a sequence rather than three isolated training modules.

What trainers should test A useful accompaniment process asks whether the project can demonstrate a market, partners, resources, costs, revenues, impact assumptions and a realistic path to financing. The canvas is therefore a conversation and validation tool, not the final deliverable.

The institutional lesson When universities or support organisations adopt green entrepreneurship methods, the real objective is not a one-off workshop. It is to build internal trainers, shared assessment criteria, reusable cases and a progression from ideation to finance readiness.
